Fall 2015 Mentors
This semester I met Wei-Ning through the SERVE living and learning community. We had several meetings regarding SERVE and how I was adjusting to living at Tech and college in general. I found these meetings very helpful because I was able to set goals and have someone holding me accountable for them. Knowing that someone was going to be asking me about how I've been doing with my goals was encouraging and helped me stick to them, and work to complete them. I've met them all to some extent, and I have goals in mind for next semester that have been sparked from these meetings.
Another mentor I've found here at Tech is Leslie, a sophomore in SERVE. She lives on my hall and is also a Biochemistry major. We both played the violin for twelve years and were even born in the same hospital in Vermont. We have similar interests, including service, and have grown to be close friends this semester. She always looks out for me, whether it be school, friends, or anything, she is always making sure I'm doing well. It's almost like I've found a big sister here at Tech, and for that I'm extremely grateful. I admire Leslie's work ethic and how much she cares about her schoolwork and her research. Most freshman don't get to do research, but Leslie was able to find a way and has been very successful in her endeavors studying peanuts proteins in relation to allergies in Dr. Bevan's lab. People always tell me Biochemistry is a hard major, but Leslie always tells me that she has complete faith in me. She constantly reminds me that anything is possible, even organic chemistry, if you love it enough. I am so grateful we lived on the same hall this semester, and that I've had to opportunity to meet someone who constantly reminds me my dreams are within reach, and supports me every step of the way.
